Γεωγραφικά κατανεμημένες προβλέψεις του μελλοντικού κλίματος, που παράγονται από κλιματικά μοντέλα, χρησιμοποιούνται ευρέως στην υδρολογία και σε πολλούς άλλους επιστημονικούς κλάδους, χωρίς συνήθως να αξιολογείται η αξιοπιστία τους. Εδώ συγκρίνουμε τα αποτελέσματα διάφορων κλιματικών μοντέλων με ιστορικές χρονοσειρές θερμοκρασίας και κατακρημνισμάτων από οκτώ σταθμούς από όλο τον κόσμο με μεγάλη περίοδο παρατηρήσεων (πάνω από 100 χρόνια). Τα αποτελέσματα των συγκρίσεων δείχνουν ότι οι επιδόσεις των μοντέλων είναι φτωχές, ακόμη και στην κλιματική (30ετή) χρονική κλίμακα. Έτσι, οι τοπικές προβλέψεις των μοντέλων δεν μπορεί να είναι αξιόπιστες, ενώ το κοινό επιχείρημα ότι τα μοντέλα μπορούν να δίνουν καλύτερες επιδόσεις σε μεγαλύτερες χωρικές κλίμακες είναι αστήρικτο.
